Antibiotics

Antibioticss are chemical substances which in diluted form have the ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms or to destroy them without harming the host. Originally they are natural microbial products but later it was modified and semi-synthetic or even synthetic antibiotics are produced. Discovery of penicillin in 1928 revolutionized the treatment of diseases. Antibiotics are produced by many actinomycetes (Streptomycin and Tetracycline), other bacteria (Bacitracin) and fungi (Penicillin). They are of two types: Broad Spectrum antibiotic (can treat wide range of pathogens) and specific antibiotic (act against one class). It also has some drawbacks like, it can act against the beneficial microorganisms, and sometimes they favour the development of drug resistance strains.
